I’m not exactly sure why, but Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. Maybe it’s the great childhood memories I have, spending time with family and watching fireworks from the school hill by my home in Ferguson, Missouri. Maybe it’s the fact that I married a Marine and on one hot July 4th I got to see him in his uniform for a parade…be still my heart. No matter how you slice it, I’m a sucker for red, white, and blue, and we get our wear out of those Old Navy flag shirts by sporting them all year long.

Lately I’ve been gravitating towards butterflies in my sewing projects. I think I’ve always loved the look of them, but I also love that they represent new life and being changed from one form to another. It reminds me of 2 Corinthians 5:17, which says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come.”
