Pattern Hack: Emory to the Max

One of the fun opportunities I’ve had as the assistant at Izzy & Ivy Designs is to dabble further into the art of the pattern hack. Don’t get me wrong…I really love sewing the patterns as written. They each have their own unique details and everything, but sometimes you just want to sew something fresh and kick things up a notch. So today I’m showing off a maxified version of the Emory Dress! It’s really pretty easy and I hope that you’ll try it for your sweet girl! The bodice is “Spirits” in Night Sky and the skirt and straps are “Canoes” in River, both from Shaman. I’ve been sewing through the prints in this line and I think the Heaven colorway is my favorite by far. This ribbon is called “Blue Wales” and is reversible! They have the most amazing ribbon and I’ve convinced myself it’s OK to hoard it because it takes up less room than fabric! I don’t even remember how I came across Alosada Maine, but oh my, are these buttons to die for! They are handmade by a company in Maine and they are a little fussy in that they are hand wash only, but they are truly unique and I’m looking forward to seeing what other products they offer in the future! First of all, you’re going to need the Emory Dress pattern from Izzy & Ivy Designs. (If you happen to have the Macy Giggles paper pattern, this will work, too!) The only additional yardage you will need will be for the skirt, so I would add 1/2 yard of your skirt fabric in order to accommodate those cuts. You will not need the fabric for the hemband, but if you choose to add one, you’ll need to adjust your maxi length. I am sewing a size 4 on my daughter who is on the short side for her size, so if you’re child is tall, you may want to adjust your length accordingly. When in doubt, cut long and hem it to fit! The original length of each skirt piece is 16 1/2″. I added 10 1/2″ to make my pieces 27″ and my 1″ hem is included in that number. The finished dress measures 32″ from shoulder to ankle, or 27 1/2″ from under the arm to the hem. Sew up one of your skirt side seams and press it to one side. IMG_5436Using a ruler and marking chalk or pen on the right side of your fabric, measure up how far you want your ribbon to sit. In this photo, I have pre-ironed my hem (measure 1/2″ and fold, press and repeat), so that I can get a better idea of how much space I have below my ribbon. Emory Maxi Dress- Izzy & Ivy Hack- Snickerdoodle StewPin your ribbon along the line and topstitch your ribbon on both sides. I forgot to take a pic!!! Match up your side seams, right sides together, making sure you open that pre-ironed hem, sew, and finish your seam as normal. Emory Maxi Dress- Izzy & Ivy Hack- Snickerdoodle StewTurn your skirt piece right side out and topstitch your hem, using just shy of a 1/2″ seam allowance.
