I really love Christmas. Like, really, REALLY love Christmas. It is, after all, the most wonderful time of the year, right? I try to celebrate the birth of Christ in how I live my life every day, but there’s just something about setting aside a whole month (or so) to make it a special part of the year. However, I am not one of those people that puts the tree up as soon as the kids have collected their Halloween loot. I like to enjoy a little more Fall before I jump into my fa-la-la-la-la. So when I received these sweet Festive Felties from Molly and Mama, to sew up for One Thimble Issue Nine, I tried to think outside the box and see how I could change them up to squeeze a little fall into these projects without going all Pumpkin Spice Latte on you all. You’re welcome. My solution? The reindeer feltie really lent itself well to being the in vogue deer with a crown of leaves and lace. Totally up my alley! I altered the holly leaf and accented the leaves with tonal stitching. Sewing all three felties took an evening’s worth of Downton Abbey episodes and it was a nice change of pace from the faster tempo of machine sewing. I can see toting these along on my next trip to see family out of town. These are intended to be ornaments, though they have a plethora of other applications, including FMA (free motion applique), headbands, and hoop art, which I chose since our tree is not up yet. They are a great project for beginning sewists, especially kids. These are quite small, no bigger than 4″ each, but they can be easily enlarged for even more craft applications. I added a sweet button and touch of lace to this soft, gray mouse. I love her little ear poking out from under her Santa hat! This cupcake feltie is probably the most versatile, and I can see using it with clothespins and bunting for a fun birthday decoration. I’m really looking forward to sewing more of these. It really got me back to my roots of hand sewing, and I loved exploring how I could change up the look. If you haven’t checked out One Thimble Issue 9, don’t wait!
