One Thimble 8- Hexies Are Fun

I’m so excited to bring you a project from the latest One Thimble E-zine! This is one of my favorite things to write about, and some of my favorite projects EVER have come from One Thimble. I was happy to lend my efforts to this blog tour for Issue 8, sponsored by Pattern Revolution. You can see the list of bloggers below…a virtual “Who’s Who” of the PDF blogging world!

For this issue, I got to try my hand at some hand sewing. This might strike fear into the hearts of those who are not quilters or have not had experience with hand embroidery or smocking. My roots are in the hand embroidered hoops of the 80s (I’ll spare you the walk down memory lane), but I really did learn a lot of sewing basics by making those hoop art projects when I was small.
This pattern is by a new-to-me designer, Hugs Are Fun. The Cactus Hoop is made up with hexagon shaped pieces (hexies!) that are assembled using an English paper piecing technique. The instructions are spot on and for someone that hasn’t ever done this type of sewing, I was able to get into a rhythm pretty quickly. I actually found it rather soothing and relaxing! I’m even thinking about adding this to my Netflix watching time, or having a stash to work on while I’m waiting to pick the kids up at school!

The pattern calls for using shades of green for the hexis and a pink flower, to resemble a cactus. While I loved the idea, my stash was not speaking to me with that color set up. So I took some inspiration from one of my favorite quilt designers, Vanessa Christenson. She also designs the most amazing, colorful fabric, that always features bright colors with crisp white. I used fabric from her Color Theory and Simply Color lines for Moda.
The pattern gives instructions for making a 6″ hoop (above) and a 4″ hoop (below). I already have plans for other hoop art using these fun hexis!

I’ve been kicking around the idea of doing this in pinks for my new niece. I wasn’t sure though whether I’d need to pick different shades of a plain fabric, but I really love the way that the same fabric works and you can still see the hexies in it. Terrific!
