Duchess and Hare is a new-to-me pattern company, but I had the pleasure of hanging out with Bernadette at Quilt Market a few years ago and while she’s the quiet type with a quirky sense of humor (which I totally get!), her designs stand out as classic looks with a fun twist. The Monster Mash Pinny is a perfect example of this!
The standout features of this pinafore are the welt pocket on the bib and the stripwork skirt with POCKETS! The pattern accommodates sizes 1/2 through 12 and can be easily adapted for girls that are between sizes or have to combine sizes to get the perfect fit.
The pattern has a combination of printed pieces and a cutting chart, and the markings for the welt pocket and belt loops help you give the garment a polished look.
I wanted something fun and kitchy to show off these pockets, so I chose Melodie by Ink & Arrow for QT Fabrics. The navy floral fabric shows off a fancy French Horn, while the pop of coral displays the conductor and a circular motif. I would be remiss to not mention my favorite crochet edge bias tape in Coral polka dots from Vintage Door. It’s a great trim to have on hand!
I really think these pockets steal the show. They were what drew me to the pattern in the first place, and it’s what will bring me back to make more! I did shorten the final length by about 2″. The skirt has a slimmer fit than most, so I felt like the shorter length fit the bill. This is an easy adjustment to make after the pinafore is just about complete. I also left off the eyes for the “monster” portion of the bib, only because I wanted the fabric to stand out.
